This is a self defense drill with the Star BM9. This is one I reconditioned and cleaned up for my youngest daughter's 22nd birthday. She is into collecting firearms.
The drill is simple and goes in a sequence. Predator approaches and with body bladed you assume a defensive posture. Predator comes in with a weapon such as a knife or bludgeon. Perhaps he is drawing a firearm himself or presenting one in a manner that is not immediately a threat. In other words the gun is not pointed at you.
Draw the gun in a hip point T-stance. At this time the predator is within 15 feet. Fire twice. Move back to about 7 yards. Get both hands on the gun. Fire twice again. Move back to about 10 yards. Fire two more rounds. You are trying to get distance between you and the predator.
There is cover at 12 yards. At this point you fire and reload. Predator appears to be down. Move back away from cover. Quick peak and move out. Predator tries to get up to come back at you. Fire twice. This time he is down.
Five shots hit the sternum area. Three went to abdomen. One hit low below the target. One hit to the right shoulder of the target. The hip point shots are deceptive looking. If you have someone at close range coming in on you, the gun will probably be right at their belly and the weak hand is there to block any sort of blow or attack.
Beautiful!!!!
Gary,
Thank you very much for the beautiful videos. I believe Lake Havasu City is a great place for living and retirement. Very nice lake! I think you are fishing and boating there!
In 2007, my wife and me had the auto-trip to the Grand Canyon National Park and Sedona from Los Angeles. This time, I worked at the UCLA, and our trip from LA was not very long. The Grand Canyon, Colorado River, Sedona are unforgettable places!! I made the numerous wonderful pictures there. The expanses of the Arizona deserts are also so impressive!
In 2013, I retired, and my wife and me moved to Southeast Texas, to our relatives. I like fishing very much, and we have built our house on the bank of Lake Livingston. Nice place for boating, sailing, and fishing. However, our property land is not very much, and our close neighbors factually can hear the gunshots. Therefore, I prefer to train with 9 mm glue bullets at short distances and shoot sometimes quiet 22 LR to keep the accuracy.
Thanks again, Gary, for your beautiful post!
Pine Island on Lake Livingston.
Bob,
I live in Lake Havasu City. When I moved here in 77 it was classified as a drainage and irrigation district. Havasu is best known for 2 things: the American home for the London Bridge and this was where McCullough chain saws were made. We incorporated in the early 80s. It’s against the law to discharge a fire arm inside the city limits. The reason we’re still considered a rural area is because the closest town is Parker Az, 30 miles to the south. Kingman AZ is 60+ miles to the north. Not much between either way. The closest airport is Las Vegas, about 150 miles to the NW and Phoenix is 200+ miles to the SE.
Sorry for the long description, no I can’t practice in the back yard like Greg, I am jealous. For today’s practice We jumped in my friends 4WD and drove a little more than a mile out of town. We have a range in town, just down the street from my house but there was a competition going on there.
I’m also a member at another range the 7-mile Range. That’s actually about 50 miles from my house and it’s just off the path when I end my shift and head back to Havasu. When I can I stop there on my 2 ½ hour drive home from where I’m stationed. For me it’s a great way to relax after a 48-hour shift. I spent an hour or so there yesterday. If I wanted I could just pull over, drive a little off the road just about any place on my drive home and get a little practice in right there. But I enjoy the range.
Where do I work? I work for the Hualapai Nation Fire Department on the Hualapai Reservation. I am assigned to Station 3 located at the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
Gary,
You live in the rural area of Arizona, right? Do you have the possibility to shoot on your property like Greg? He is a lucky man. I hate the public shooting ranges because of their strong restrictions. Sometimes, I can use only 22LR subsonic to avoid any problems with my neighbors. The purchase of a silencer is a big headache in the USA.
Just got back from a little practice with my Star BM. A good shooter.
Star MB 9mm nice gun, I have one also. Training gets people ready, just in case.
Hi Bob,
That last clip was from Calibre Press' "Surviving Edged Weapons" and shows what a determined and trained attacker is capable of. It was produced back in the eighties, but is still very accurate in how it depicts attacks by edged weapons.
In the scenario I did the drill with: the assumption was that there wasn't an attack, but a threat that may have tried to turn into an attack. A knife or club were being presented as a stick up, or perhaps a knife or gun were being reached for.
In a situation where the attack is on from the start; empty hand is all you can do. Get off the line of the attack and try to neutralize the threat. Also if a firearm is already drawn and pointed at you, the worst mistake is to try to draw yourself. You have to look for an opportunity where the predator relaxes their guard.
Great video, Greg!. Very useful demo and description. The most dangerous moment is a start of the attack. Aggressive attackers covers 15-20 feet distance for 2-2.5 sec. I saw the videos, where the officers just did not have a chance to use their weapons when they were attacked by a suspect with a knife at a shot distance. The really sad situation.
