Really hard to say. Maybe because I wrestled briefly as a 10 year old for a team coached by Springfield College wrestline coach Ray Sparks. Tried backyard boxing with a friend and had the lights turned out - briefly - played baseball and hockey both of which require a certain amount of strength I didn't have. Tried Atlas at age 14 but couldn't get the hang of that either. Age 16 got weights; it seemed to be the answer - got a lot stronger, but no real muscle mass until age 20. Then in just a few months I went from 145 to 175. Began getting some respect in the 'hood and some success in sports. Mid twenties I led my hockey team in scoring; was fifth in the league overall in '70 - 71; got in a few tussles which happens in hockey. Did OK. Got to thinking one warm summer afternoon in '70: what is the common denominator here? I could see that it was the training, the cold bar in my hands, the heavy (for me) iron, the focus, the challenge and the results. Made a lot of mistakes. Nautilus for eleven expensive years, overtraining; years at 300.00 per annum, getting up at 4:00 A.M. to eat before walking my canine brother in the dark so as to be at the Y and Nautilus at 6:00; training through injuries and feeling like nothing could stop me. Maybe ego was involved. Now living with my wife in a retirement community, age 74, and I've got my pushup bars and stretch bands in the closet. Just sat down after my workout to slowly type all this nonsense out. Still not sure why I do this and don't really care anymore. I love it and I'm gonna keep at it until the good Lord calls me home.
