Weigtlifting can injure us, there are ways to get all the benifits without injury!
Isometrics: For those that love Isometrics use a Mickey Mantle 1 Minute a Day Gym Isometric Exerciser, or a Snyder Isometric Exerciser and even a Strength Builder Isometric Exerciser, or build a Isometric Exerciser. I own Snyder and Mickey Mantle Exercisers. In New York guys used 1 rep with an Isometric Exerciser, but some used 3 or 5 reps!
In Chi Mind Control, Mike Dayton on page 128, 129, 130 shows weight lifting exercises without weights, using your imagination. As a boy in the 1950's I learned the Charles Atlas method of using internal muscle resistance with weightlifting exercises in my uncles Boxing Gym; and VRT works! Some call it Isometric Power Flexing. Buy the VRT book and you are empowered, Mike Dayton's book is expensive.
Ellington Darden teaches the 30/30/30 method (30 seconds negitive, 30 seconds positive and 30 seconds negitive). But the 30/30/30 method is for exercises done on a machine! For barbell and dumbbell exercises Darden teachs 20/20/20. There is also the 10/10 super slow method, Darden use to teach the 10/5 second super slow method; plus VRT done at regular speed works!
ddmoates29 you are most welcome, enjoy.
MikeNY, Thanks, I got it now. Much appreciated.
ddmoates29, you fasten the belt, and shorten the length, standing on the belt, try to curl it up with both hands. It will not move but you get agreat Isometric curl!
MikeNY could you give me a couple of examples of how to you can use a steamer trunk brlt or a yoga belt in a workout? I'm having difficulty picturing this and it sounds interesting to me. And thanks for your many and excellent contributions on this forum. I go back probably older than you and enjoy the information here and the references to boxing.
PS that Yoga Beltt mentioned above is for Isometrics using a Belt.
My one friend was a weigtlifter and now uses moving Isometric weight lifting/VRT with a 5 foot oak figting staff as a barbell and Reflexology wooden footrollers as dumbbells. And he gets the results he wanted! Friend's that do not know him & some that do also like using a five foot oak staff, I use it sometimes. When tried Isometric Weightlifting as an adult it did not work until I used a oak staff, then with or without it worked!
PS: one can use a strong belt; such as were used on large "Steamer" Trunks, and sold in hardware stores in the 1950s & 1960s. The modern version is called a "Yoga Belt" and you can buy it online, I'd get a 10' or 12' belt.
James A. Baley wrote a book and the using weightlifting exercises with is covered, it is an Isometric, no movement. The book is "Illustrated Guide to Developing Athletic Strength Power & Ability" and there is a paperback entitled "The Athlete's Guide: Increasing Strength, Power & Agility"
