I watched the Gordon Scott Tarzan movie today where Jock Mahoney played the villain. It was actually pretty good, and I got a good comparison of his and Mahoney's builds and athletic abilities. Take your pick. Mahoney was more of what someone would look like living in the wild. Scott was a genetic freak with large bones and an impossibly small waist to go with a deep chest.
Both men were incredibly athletic. Scott while a weight trainer was more of an all around athlete who was a hand to hand combat instructor in the army, was a life guard at a Los Vegas pool, and worked various jobs as firemen and cowboy. In Africa he lassoed a giraffe and rode it on a bet.
So who made the best Tarzan? Scott fit more of the clean limbed description that Edgar Rice Burroughs created. Large boned, heavy and strong, you'd expect someone like that to survive among large ape-like creatures.
As I've mentioned in other posts in times past, I liked Mike Henry's physique as Tarzan more so than than any other. However, the part physically chewed him, Ron Ely, and Jock Mahoney up as they all did their own stunts. I don't think this happened to Scott though. Anyway, it is fun to look back.

Hunter and gatherer all the way!
